Tip of the Week: Pass on the Play-doh

Lots of commercial and homemade versions of play-doh contain gluten.  Play-doh has a way of getting under nails and on cuticles, so the gluten lingers.  This is especially problematic for small children who don’t wash their hands thoroughly and for kids who suck their thumbs.

bill’s Pizzeria in Natick, MA

Those of us who have been part of the gluten free world for a while know that, like a few good men, a good pizza is hard to find. And a good restaurant that serves good gluten free pizza is even harder to find! For a long time, our kids had to look longingly as we drove by one pizzeria after another, settling for a decent homemade pizza rather than a great take-out. But our luck has changed! Just recently, Susannah discovered bill’s Pizzeria (yes, the “b” is supposed to be lowercase!), and we may all just move in.

So why are we so wild about bill’s? Mainly because you’d never know you were eating gluten free pizza – it’s that good! The crust, by Strawberry Moon (strawmoon.com), is thin, and strikes just the right balance between crisp and chewy. For those of you who’ve tried a ton of gluten free pizza, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the lack of “grit”. Topped with a classic pizza sauce, and plenty of stretchy, melty cheese, the whole package is just delicious. So far we’ve tried three of their nineteen (yes, nineteen!) specialty pizzas and have loved each one. We’re looking forward to working our way through the entire list.

Because they have been personally touched by a child with celiac, the staff are well-informed about contamination issues. Their crust is made in a dedicated gluten free facility, and the pizza is baked on a pan to avoid cross-contamination. The staff is not only knowledgeable about the gluten free products they carry, but they also welcomed suggestions and requests. When presented with Susannah’s wish list, they agreed to try to find a gluten free pasta, gluten free bread for a tuna melt, a gluten free bun for hamburgers, and even a gluten free meatball sub.  Yes, you heard us: a gluten free meatball sub – which Susannah and Nicole (and probably many of you) have been dreaming about for years.

Not only do Nicole and Susannah adore this pizza, bill’s also receives rave review from the kids. After devouring six pieces, 5 year old Elizabeth exclaimed to the staff, “I want to come here every Monday.  No! I want to come here every day!” And she would, if only she had charge of the car keys!  Later, Susannah brought some leftovers over for Nicole’s kiddos to try. After one bite each, it was like watching four castaways who had just returned from a desert isle. They couldn’t even wait until the pizza was reheated! Amid all the chewing, we heard the following ringing endorsements: “It’s as good as our favorite gluten pizza!” “I’d recommend it five times!” “You’d think it had gluten in it!” and “I think it even helps me to jump higher!” High praise, indeed.

The Newton location (spelled with a capital “B”) also offers the gluten free line. So be sure to check them out, and tell them the gluten free tribe sent you!
